How can I reduce my bore?

What is a bore?

Many of you have asked us this question. It is simply the diameter of the hole in a mechanical piece.
On discs or other circular polishing tools, it is the diameter of the hole where the tool is fixed on the shaft or drive axle (a wheel, a disc or a grinding wheel).

It may happen that you are confronted with particular bore dimensions depending on the diameter of the drive shaft of your machine. But don't panic: it is possible to reduce the hole diameter of your discs, wheels and grinding wheels thanks to simple mounting accessories that allow you to perfectly adjust the hole diameter of your tools to the drive axle.

Explanation:

Polishing tools have mounting holes with rather common bores with a tendency to become standardized.
At SPAP SOUCILLE, we offer 2 systems to reduce the bore of the fixing holes of your wheel which can be used individually or in combination.

  • Centring flange :

Centering flanges

Our polyethylene (HDPE) centering flanges with shoulders are a practical solution for reducing the bore of your wheel mounting holes and getting a perfect centering on the drive shaft.

But how does it work?

It' s very simple: first, you have to choose a flange with a shoulder that fits the center hole (bore) of your wheel .

HDPE centering flanges are drilled to the most common diameters (25 mm, 32 mm or 35 mm), or even just pointed in the center so you can make the mounting hole to the desired diameter yourself.
The role of the shoulder of the flange with the diameter adapted to the drilling of your wheel is to perfectly center and maintain it, while its central bore of 25, 32 or 35 mm will allow a mounting on a drive axle of one of these common diameters.

et's take an example : you want to use a flap wheel with dimensions Ø 200 x 30 mm with a central bore of 76.2mm. You need to choose a shoulder flange of the same diameter (76.2mm inside diameter ØA and 95mm outside diameter ØB ), but with a bore of 32 mm or 35 mm depending on the diameter of the drive shaft axis.

Then, it is enough to proceed to the assembly.

  • Reduction rings

Plastic reduction rings with flange

It happens sometimes, and quite often, that the drive axle of your machine does not correspond to the bores of the wheels and discs available on the market and that you wish to use.

In this case, an operational and secure assembly can be obtained with plastic reduction rings, with or without flange.

These rings are available in a wide range of sizes and can be used in combination with our HDPE centering and reduction flanges or even combined with each other to obtain a bore perfectly adapted to the diameter of the drive shaft.

The centering flanges and reduction rings are always mounted in pairs. It is preferable to use as many standard reduction rings as necessary to compensate for the bore of the tool (grinding wheel or disc) and to ensure a good fit.

In this case, the thickness of the standard rings may slightly exceed the thickness of the tool. In this case, it will be necessary to reduce the thickness of a ring, by band or grinding wheel, to obtain a thickness that perfectly matches the thickness of the tool or slightly less.

Practical examples:

  1. You have adapted a flap wheel with HDPE centering and reduction flanges with a 32 mm bore but the drive shaft of your machine has a diameter of 25 mm. The best solution will be to put on each side of the flanges a Ø32/25 reduction ring.
  2. You wish to use a technical brush Ø250 X 27 bore 35 mm Steel and the axle of your reel is 22 mm. In this case, the assembly can be done by inserting 2 standard rings Ø35 x 10 mm - Bore 22 mm with a 3rd one after having reduced its thickness with the band or the grinding wheel of 3 or 4 mm.
